The Skinpen Facial is a non-surgical procedure that aims to improve your facial appearance. During the procedure, a licensed provider of the Skinpen Facial will resurface your face, periorbital (the area around your eyes), forehead and neck skin.
At Ver Halen Aesthetics & Plastic Surgery, a Skinpen Facial is a quick and easy procedure. You will notice the benefits on the same day, and full results should be seen after two to three weeks. After about 6 months, the results may start to fade, although many of our patients experience benefits 9 to 18 months after treatment. If you opt for a series of treatments, this will increase your chances of long-lasting results.
The Skinpen Facial can correct many of your complaints about your facial appearance, including:
- ‘Crow’s feet’ (lines at the corners of your eyes)
- ‘Bunny lines’ (wrinkles on your nose)
- Fine lines around the mouth
- Forehead wrinkles
- Smile lines
- Frown lines
- Acne scars
- Poor skin texture
- Large pores
- Dark circles around the eyes
- Sun damage
- Crepey skin under your eyes and on your neck
Eligibility for the Skinpen Facial
If you struggle with any of the facial issues listed above, then you could make a great candidate. If you have more advanced signs of aging, then this might not be the optimal treatment for you. You would likely benefit more from BOTOX® injections or a surgical procedure, like a facelift.
Skinpen Facial vs. Nonsurgical Facelift
You may have also heard of the Nonsurgical Facelift. While both involve the use of your own platelet-rich plasma, they are quite different. The Skinpen Facial uses microneedling, with your own blood serum applied topically to your skin. The Facelift, on the other hand, involves injecting serum under the skin. The procedures can complement each other. The Facial is intended to enhance the appearance of your skin. The Facelift does this too, but it has the added benefit of adding volume to the face. When you combine both treatments, you can achieve an even more youthful facial appearance. Learn more about the Nonsurgical Facelift HERE.
Skinpen Facial: The Consultation
We have two staff members who are licensed to administer the Skinpen Facial:
- Elaine Ver Halen, MPAS, PA-C
- Jon Ver Halen, MD
Both have experience with the Skinpen Facial, they both have your best interests at heart, and they’re both determined to find the optimal solution for each patient they see.
When you book a one-on-one consultation with either Dr. Ver Halen or Elaine before your procedure, there are various topics you two will discuss, including:
- Your desired outcome and expectations
- Medical history, as well as any medical conditions
- Current use of prescription drugs, dietary supplements, alcohol, tobacco, and/or recreational drugs
- Allergies
- Risks of the procedure
A personal, in-depth consultation is the best way to determine if the Skinpen Facial is the right treatment for your needs.
Skinpen Facial: The Procedure
Before the procedure takes place, blood will be drawn from one of your arms, just like during a blood test. It will then be spun in a centrifuge, which allows the different components of the blood to separate. The layer that your provider uses is the blood serum, which contains a number of growth factors. They will then apply a numbing cream to your face. After this, they will start microneedling, which means using a device with tiny needles to create small punctures on the top layer of the facial skin. The punctures are so tiny, they’re barely visible, and the numbing cream ensures you only feel minor pressure during the procedure. Microneedling encourages the body to produce more collagen and elastin. These parts of your skin reduce as you age. Microneedling encourages the skin to heal itself, essentially. Microneedling is soon followed by a topical application of your own blood. This further stimulates the skin’s healing process. The whole procedure takes just 30 minutes.
Skinpen Facial: The Recovery
The Skinpen Facial is a quick, outpatient procedure with very little recovery time. The speed of the procedure means that you could get it done on your lunch break and be back in time to finish your day. Many patients experience no pain when the treatment is over. On the day of treatment and the day after, you might notice some redness and tenderness in your face. This is completely normal and is not much different than a mild sunburn. Your skin is able to absorb most of the blood serum in the span of 24 hours, so after just a couple days, you should feel completely fine.
The Skinpen Facial Combined with Other Procedures
Many of our patients like to combine the Skinpen Facial with other treatments, like BOTOX or Dysport®, in order to achieve an even more youthful appearance. Let us know if you’re considering combining treatments, and we’ll discuss possible options with you and develop a treatment plan that best fits your needs.
Skinpen Facial Risks
The Skinpen Facial is a non-surgical procedure, so it comes with fewer risks than surgical treatments, like facelifts. No incisions are made, which means you can enjoy your rejuvenating results without any scars. As a non-surgical treatment, anesthesia isn’t necessary, so you can avoid the side effects and risks associated with that too. Finally, since serum is extracted from your own blood, there is no risk of allergic reaction.
There are still some potential risks involved with a Nonsurgical Facelift. It’s important to be aware of them before undergoing the procedure:
- Redness
- Minor inflammation
- Bruising
- Swelling
- Itching
- Discoloration
- Mild itching
- Bleeding
- Infection
- Nerve trauma
Most of these side effects are temporary and shouldn’t last more than a day. If they persist for longer than 24 hours, get in touch with us right away.
